Back-to-Back Days

After my wife once again yelled at me for "pusing it", I ran my 3 miles today. I had a little discomfort around mile 2, but nowhere near the pain I was experiencing. After the success of yesterday, I was hoping to average 10 minutes per mile, but only managed 10:33. I can't blame it on my knee, though; I feel I have have gone back to the week of August 10, 2009 - the week I started running 1 mile and gasping for breath every step of the way.

I will not discuss my diet on this New Year's eve.

Back on Track! 4 Miles

Well, I did it! I ran the 4 miles I had scheduled. I ran slowly - especially up and down hills, which are not good for Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS). My knee began hurting around mile 3. It seems my scheduled miles are 1 mile more than what my knee wants to run. However, I was able to run the whole 4 miles without having to walk any. I also did it in just over 39 minutes, with my slow pace, I was aiming for 42-44 minutes. It is not about the speed, though. It is about finishing a half marathon - and although the half is growing in popularity, it is still something only a small percentage of people complete. My main goal is a full marathon.

Today and tomorrow are my back-to-back days, so I will see how my knee does for 2 days in a row for the first time in a long time. I also drop back down to 3 miles, so I will be able to see about that, too.

I am excited about the improvement, but I know that it can all change in an instance.

December 29, 2009

Today was a rest day for my training - like I needed another rest day after missing so many days. I want to get back on track, including eating better, which is difficult for a supertaster in the first place. I already have 9 pounds to lose from the lack of running the past month and the holidays. Hopefully, when I go back to work on January 4, I will get back into the routine that I followed as I trained for the Clarksville Half Marathon.

I always feel better after run. My problem is getting off my butt, out the door, and running. Of course, the run isn't always exhilarating, but piling up mileage feels good. I feel both a healthy good and egotistical good after running.

Today, we did go into work for about 5 hours. We usually go in one day on our 2 week holiday vacation to catch up on a few things - go through the mail, make a bank deposit, etc., so it won't all hit us the Monday we return to work.

December 28, 2009

I am a week behind schedule on my training. I ran/walked with my wife for 20 minutes, alternating every two minutes. I then ran a mile in 9:33. I had planned on 3 miles (as scheduled), but my knee began hurting that I had to walk some just to finish the mile.

Well, I am up-to-date. Now, if I can only stay current, and start runnning!

Decemeber 27, 2009

Sherri and I went to eat with Brandi and Ricky at Outback. We then went to Best Buy for Brandi to buy a computer.

December 26, 2009

Four miles scheduled for today -I ran none! Some blog: Born2Run@40, when I don't run at all. Hopefully, that will change soon.

Sherri did a little after-CHRISTmas shopping. I met her to eat at O' Charley's.

CHRISTmas

Yes, CHRIST - mas.

Sherri and I had our CHRISTmas with Porky (our pitbull).

My mom did not have Christmas at her house this year (that would take another blog), so we just dropped off some presents at her house for her, my sister (and nieces), then at my brother's for his family. Then stopped by my Grandma Sykes's.

Christmas Eve!

Sherri and I went to church and then to my dad's. I always get some cool stuff there!

Again, I did not run the three miles scheduled for today - two days missed.

December 23, 2009

Returned home!

Needless to say, I did not run my three miles today.

December 22, 2009

A day late, but I did begin my training. I ran 3 miles in 29:53 - better than I had expected, due to this being only the second time I have run since getting injured on November 15th, the altitude, and the cold mountain air.

My wife and I did a little shopping. Then went back to the chalet. She, Holly, and Crissy went shopping. Derek had gone to a friend's that lived not too far away. Brandi, Ricky, and Lindsey had gone up the mountain we did yesterday. Cory stayed at the chalet to keep Lainey; JJ (what the grandkids will call me) stayed to babysit Max. It was fine for a short while. Then Max woke up with the hiccups, which kept him from keeping the pacifer in his mouth. I picked him up, layed him down, rocked him, bounced him, but nothing worked. I called Sherri's cell phone 31 times! After a couple of times, I called and hung up after one ring and immediately called back to run up the number of missed calls to prove to her she needed to carry the cell phone with her at all times. If it was too bad, I would have called Holly's phone. I finally got Max calmed down and he fell asleep - about 15 minutes before they walked in the door. Max has stomach issues and I wasn't sure if there was something that I should have tried, but we survived.

The women (and whoever else wanted to go) were to go into Gatlinburg at 5:00 - when it would be getting dark to see the Christmas lights. Well, Brandi and family was still on the mountain. The rest of us when to the Texas Roadhouse to eat.

December 21, 2009

Today, winter begins.

Today, I was to begin training for a half marathon at the end of February. I did not run my three miles.

We all kind of did our separate things today. My wife and I drove up one of the mountains and saw "snow". The mountain we were staying on did not have any, so we weren't sure why we were told we couldn't get to our "original" chalet - now we know.

Sherri's sister and family came to our chalet that evening and we played Dirty Santa.

December 20, 2009

On our way to Gatlinburg, we received a call that we would be unable to get to our chalet due to snow and ice. We would be moved to another one. Then they said we would be sharing one with my wife's sister's family. There was the run-around, but eventually everything got ironed out. I will skip all the details.

The evening we arrived we had our Christmas with the girls and their families.

December 19, 2009

My wife and I had planned on going to Gatlinburg today and staying in a hotel, but decided to wait and leave tomorrow to check into our chalet.

December 18, 2009

Okay. Okay. It is Decemeber 28; it has been 11 days since my first post. I will try to catch up right now, after all I have been out of town and Christmas has just passed by. This entry will be for December 18th.

On the evening of December 17th, I received a very touching birthday card from Derek, Holly, and Max. It almost - I said "almost" - brought a tear to my eye. I also got a card from my wife, Sherri. She ordered me a present, but it didn't arrive in time. They told her it would arrive in time for Christmas; it did not. A package arrived today and it is not what she ordered.

Today was kind of hectic at work. I was trying to get everything done and prepared for being off for two weeks over the Christmas and New Year's holidays.

Blog Title is a Little Misleading

Since I turned 40 today, I thought it would be a good day to begin a blog.

I actually started running at 39; my first run was 1 mile on August 10. My cousin, Todd, and brother, Shane, talked me into it. I was really against subjecting myself to such pain. However, I found out that I liked -really liked -running! Hence, the Born2Run@40 title. I wish now that I had started years earlier.

My first run was many years ago in the small town I lived in at the time. (I was 15 or 16 years old). Todd (my age) and some members of his school's track team came to run the 5K race. However, it was Scott (Todd's older brother) that talked me into running it. The only running I had been doing was for basketball and baseball. Basketball had ended a couple of months earlier and baseball was yet to start. However, I beat everyone of the track-teamers, but one, finishing 2nd in my age group! Born to run?

I ran the 5K or 1-mile Fun Run each year until my early 20's, usually placing in my age group in the 5K and finishing in the top 3 in the Fun Run. I never ever trained for them - I just went out and ran. Yes, I was lazy. Looking back, I can only wonder what I could have accomplished if I had worked at it.

So, after almost a 20-year hiatus, I'm running again. I just can't go out run like I did as a teenager, so I started out at one mile in August and ran a Half Marathon in November. I had planned on attempting a Marathon in January, but an injury has ended that quest. I have only ran once in over a month (another reason the title is misleading?). The pain in my knee stopped me once again. I believe (self-diagnosed via internet) that it is Iliotibial Band Syndrome. I hope the time off has helped it heal, because Monday is the day I start training for a Half Marathon at the end of February.
