Friday, February 26, 2010

I did not run Wednesday. I just did not want to run in the cold. Plus, the wind was making it even worse. By failing to log this run, means that (if I remember correctly) I only completed one week as called for in the 10 week training schedule for Saturday's half marathon.

I did run on Thursday. I had to make myself, though. I ran 4 miles as derived from missing Wednesday and using both the full and half schedules. Wednesday was a half 3, full 6; Thursday was a half walk 2, but I used it as a run, and a full 4. I added them up and divided by 4 to get 3.75, which I rounded to 4 miles. It was 35 degrees when I headed out the door, but the wind wasn't too bad. I felt pretty good running, too.

Tomorrow is the big day. Supposedly, the high will be 50 degrees in Oxford. However, it will be quite chilly at the start of the race, because the temperature is to reach a low of 26 the night before. My weight is a concern, but there is nothing I can do about that now. I'm pumped about running, but sure am dreading those hills.

Monday, February 22, 2010

The weather was quite different from Saturday's sunny, 60+ degree run. It was around 40 degrees with a very light sprinkle. I ran 3 miles, which the half called for, and not the full's schedule of 4. I also did not push myself, but comfortably ran. I'm still 5 pounds over what I ran the Clarksville Half in and 8 pounds over what I want to be Saturday. There is not much I can do now to reach that goal without starving myself. And I'm not going to do that! Starving myself would also cost me fuel I will need to complete the run. I will just have to live (and run) with it.

10 Miles

Finally, a day to run with the temperature above for 40 degrees. It was not only just above 40, it was 60 degrees when I took off. The temp had reached 66 when I returned with a high of 67 for the day.

I ran the average mileage again. The half called for 8; the full for 12. I ran this 10-miler a little faster than the 10 I did in Mississippi last week - a 9:27 pace vs. 9:36. My heels and shins were aching a little the first mile to mile-and-a-half, but they loosened up. I felt better on the last half of the run, recording 4 of my 5 fastest miles for this run.
Mile 1 9:04
Mile 2 9:35
Mile 3 10:00
Mile 4 9:53
Mile 5 9:24
Mile 6 9:56
Mile 7 9:10
Mile 8 9:13
Mile 9 9:17
Mile 10 8:56

Next Saturday is the big day!

February 18, 2010

A very disappointing 10:31 pace over my 4 mile run. That is all I have to say.

February 17, 2010

My Half Marathon called for 4 miles, the Full for 6, so I ran 5. I am still way over the weight I want to be in 10 days. I am counting on not reaching my goal. We just received 2 dozen chocolate glazed Krispy Kreme donuts. I may gain 10 pounds, instead of losing it!

February 15, 2010

I ran 4 miles. My Half-Marathon scheduled called for 3, while the Full called for 4. I decided that since I have missed so many runs that I would run the higher amount. It was 30 degrees and just flurrying when I headed out. During the run, the snow began falling harder and the wind really picked up. At times, I could not look up ahead of me for the wind blowing snow in my eyes. My time was a very disappointing 40:34 (a 10:09 pace).

February 14, 2010

I decided I would run the 10 miles this morning, before we headed back to Tennessee. It took me 01:36:00 (about a 9:36 pace). I was pleased with the time being under 10 minutes per mile.

February 13, 2010

I decided I was going to run the average - 10 miles. However, since we got up early and drove to Mississippi, I did not run today.

Derek drove me around the course. There are some HILLS! Steep hills. Long hills. The race starts off downhill; however, you must run up that same hill to the finish. There is also what I think is a dangerous hill. With probably just under a mile before the finish line, there is quite a steep hill. It is downhill, but after running 12 miles, a lot of runners will be "losing" their legs. Navagating down that hill may be a disaster for some runners.

Now that I have seen the course, I know a little of what is to come. I think, though, I would have been better off not knowing.

February 11, 2010

Other than running Monday's run on Tuesday, I'm on pace to complete a whole week of scheduled training. I did run a little extra on Wednesday, and Saturday's long run could be a problem. My half marathon schedule calls for 9 miles; the whole marathon training suggests 11. I haven't decided on which mileage to run or to do the average of 10. However, that is not the problem. We are driving down to Mississippi Saturday morning. I am not going to want to run while we are visiting. I am sure I will not want to run when we got back Sunday - no matter what time. Hopefully, I will squeeze it in sometime.

When I weighed Monday, I weighed more than when I started running six months ago! Now, I am trying to eat a lot of cereal. I have 16 days to get to the weight I want to run the Oxford Half.

Side Note 1: The remake of "We Are the World" will contain Michael Jackson singing.

Side Note 2: Washington, DC has record snow fall. I told someone we needed to send Al Gore back to Washington, so he could witness Global Warning firsthand. That person told me he saw on the news that someone built an igloo in either Washington or Maryland and put a sign in front of it for Al Gore.

February 10, 2010

I was to run 5 miles - no, no excuses this time - I did 5+ miles. I ran over 1.5 miles away from home and turned around and headed back, because it was getting dark. Around 2.3 miles, the battery in my GPS died. When I got back to my driveway, I just called it 3 miles even. I continued running for what I knew was 2 more miles, so I actually ran a total of 5.3-5.4 miles. I used the total amount of elapsed time instead of trying to make an adjustment. This way, the next time I run a 5-miler, I "should" have a better time.

February 9, 2010 and Catch-up

Sunday, the 7th, we went to Lainey's Christening at the church Crissy and Cory attend. It was also Super Bowl Sunday. The TV was on the game, but I was mostly staring at my computer while it was on. I was not all that interested in the game, except that I wanted Peyton Manning to lose.

Monday, Sherri made me go to the high school basketball game, because Houston County was playing near our home at Montgomery Central. It was snowing pretty good when we arrived at the gym sometime before 6:00. Houston County and some other areas (especially in west Tennessee) already had some snow beginning to accumulate, but they sent the HC team on to try to get in a non district game. Well, to make a long story short, they called the game at halftime of the girls' game. Snow was already building up on the vehicles and roads when we left. I heard it took some people 1.5 hours to get back home in Houston County.

Late Monday night and Tuesday: Sometime during the night/morning, the snow turned into rain. At around 4:30, the rain was making the snow disappear. We went back to bed for a little while, since I was going to wait for the roads to clear up a little more before heading to work. Plus, I saw on the news that the rain would turn back to snow. The next time I got up everything was white again and it was snowing. We did not go into work (Sherri wasn't going anyway). I did get in the 4 miles I was supposed to run yesterday, though.

12 Miles

I ran 12 miles today in the off-and-on spitting of snow. The temperature was 33 degrees when I left, and 33 degrees when I returned over 2 hours later. The wind was torturous and always seemed to be blowing against me- if I made a u-turn, so did the wind. It took me exactly 2 hours and 3 minutes to complete my run. To best my Clarksville Half Marathon, I have to add 1.1 miles and take off 5 minutes.

The 12 mile run is the longest run in my Half Marathon training; I have entered my taper period for the February 27, Oxford Run 4 Hope Half Marathon. Check out www.oxfordrun4hope.com for what the organization does and other information.

February 5, 2010

I did not run yesterday. I let the medium to heavy drizzle stop me. I ran it today instead. I did not run the 6; I only ran 5, and I ran it in a light drizzle.

February 3, 2010

I had 6 miles scheduled for today. Since we got home a little late from and it was getting dark, I only ran 4 miles. I had 4 miles scheduled for tomorrow, so I hope to run the 6 - swap days.

My foot did not hurt too much while running, but afterwards was a different story.

February 1, 2010

Well, my plan to get back on schedule has once again been delayed. My right foot hurts so badly it is difficult to walk. It feels like it has been broken all the way across, especially on the outer side.

Sherri and I did venture in to work today. We left home late to avoid rush hour traffic and to let the snow have a longer chance of melting off the roads. As we were getting into Nashville, Elrod called and said not to come in via Donelson Pike. Tractor-trailer trucks (and other) vehicles littered the hills from that direction. We made a wrong turn coming in from a different direction and the road was covered! I couldn't believe that Nashville had a road that bad. The road our company is located on was covered. Semis constantly run this road; Why is it still so bad?

When Sherri finished what she had to do, we headed home. We started out the way we normally do, but had to turn around because the trucks still had the road blocked. Other than that, we made it without incident.

January 31, 2010

Some roads were still covered with snow, but I decided I should run the 11 miles I was supposed to run yesterday. (I haven't ran in 6 days - I have almost lost a whole week of training.)

My feet and lower legs hurt like crazy from the beginning. After the first mile or so, I almost started walking back home. After about 4 painful miles, my feet and legs began to loosen up. However, it was still a tough run from beginning to end. I was probably more sore after this run than any previous run, including when I first started running back in August. The pain in my feet keep me at a slow pace. As I turned up the road to my house, I met Sherri. Because I had been gone so long, she was on her way to look for me. And I still had 3/4 of a mile to go! It took me 2 hours, 1 minute, and 24 seconds to finish. I ran the half marathon faster than this. Instead of being more rested after not running for 6 days, I was in worse shape. I have got to stick with my schedule the rest of the way. The Oxford Half Marathon is in 27 days, and I do not remember the last time I completed a week of training as scheduled.

I was very disappointed with the Grammys tribute to Michael Jackson - 4 of those 5 people should not have been singing. Sheryl Crow was the next speaker, if I remember correctly. Why didn't she sing in honor of Michael? Who was she before she became a solo star? One of Michael Jackson's backup singers (and rumored girlfriend) back in the BAD days. Smokey - okay; Usher - not there yet; Celine - and Michael?; Jennifer Hudson - not really a famous singer, better know for being in the movie "Dreamgirls"; Carrie Underwood - please, get her off the stage. Why not Lionel Richie, who did the intro? Why not will.i.am, Fergie, Akon - somebody Michael actually worked with? I really would have loved to have seen 3T singing it! If you don't know about 3T, they are Michael's nephews (Tito's sons). I suggest the album "Brotherhood", which includes Michael on a couple of tracks.

January 29, 2010

I did not run my 5 miles on Wednesday or my 4 on Thursday.

The weatherpersons have been talking about snow. It was once believed that we would have snow this morning. We did not. I ended up going to work an hour late. As my luck would have it, the snow began falling just before I pulled into the parking lot at work. In about 45 minutes, just about everything outside was white, so I headed home about 9:30. As I swapped lanes on Donelson Pike, my truck fished-tailed a bit, but I was able to keep it under control. I did 35-45 miles-per-hour on the interstate until I reached the Joelton exit. There was not a snowflake to be seen! And it was off to the races! I would get up to 75-80 mph and people were passing me. When I got home, nothing. Sherri said it snowed earlier that morning, but there was not a trace left. Clarksville did not start getting the snow until almost 1:30 pm. But we finally got it.

Sherri and I were supposed to go to Mississippi to visit/babysit Max. Needless to say, we didn't even try, especially since Holly called and said they were getting ice and some places were without electricity.
